We were delighted to be featured on Sky News last night, where our Audience Response System supported the channel’s debate about the future of NHS funding (you can watch the highlights here, or click the video link in the image above to see our Audience Response Systems in action).

The client’s brief was simple: They needed a reliable, easy-to-use voting system that would work on live television without a hitch. Audience members would have one minute to submit their vote before the results would be broadcast, leaving no room for error.

We have complete confidence in the reliability of our handsets and software, and were very happy to take this project on. Our years of technical experience means that we were able to provide the perfect setup first-time, which was essential.

CLiKAPAD systems in action

Following a very insightful debate, audience members were asked to share their opinion on the over-arching question: Should increases in NHS funding be paid for exclusively out of higher taxes?

As you can see in this clip, participants have no difficulty using their individual CLiKAPAD voting handsets to quickly cast their choice. The results are then available just moments later, integrated seamlessly into the on-screen graphics.

Why choose an Audience Response System (ARS)?

In situations like this, an ARS is an extremely useful tool.

Prior to the live show, a straw poll was taken to assess the audience’s initial beliefs about the issues at hand. The data taken in the final poll would allow analysts to compare the success of both sides of the debate, potentially even seeing which demographics changed their minds the most, thanks to the options available in our ppvote software.

It’s easy to see why anonymous voting, rather than a show of hands or a coloured placard, is beneficial too. Nobody has to openly admit which side of the debate they support or feel self-conscious about changing their minds by the end of the session.

It’s been a busy month for CLiKAPAD.  As always we’ve been providing training for an array of clients using our voting system for their meetings and training sessions.

In addition the team headed to Madrid to provide voting capability for 1000 delegates at a pharmaceutical conference; we ran voting in the plenary sessions at the 500 strong AELP National conference and we produced a risk assessment process for one of the UK’s leading clothing retailers.

Throughout June and July our voting keypads are also in daily use at the Lyric Theatre, Hammersmith for their production of Terror, where the audience are invited to vote on a verdict for the court case at the heart of the production.

One highlight was seeing the voting keypads on TV! ITV used CLiKAPAD keypads for the audience vote on their new show – Get Your Act Together. The voting software used for the broadcast was created by Kinetic Pixel.

We’re always delighted to see successful projects being run by new developers.  Kinetic Pixel reported a super fast response rate from the keypads, collecting 400 votes in under 2 seconds.

One set of keypads travelled to Mozambique for use in training. Another went off to a brewery for use in a fun quiz for their staff.

We also supported a six venue roadshow of stakeholder workshops, where the keypads were used to rate the long-term priorities for an electricity distributor. Rating Votes were used to measure the importance of a list of priorities. Rating items allows you to see the voting results for a number of items on the same slide as average scores.

They also used Sequence Votes, which is a process where more than one item can be selected from a list. Weightings can also be applied, so the delegate’s first choice is worth more points than their second and so forth.

Of course there were plenty more events taking place using multiple choice voting and instantly displaying results live on screen.

The show features a group of celebrities who have been tasked with taking up a specific performance skill. They must then master their chosen skill before performing alongside their mentors in front of a live studio audience.

We were delighted to award the runner-up prize on the night to footballer Jacob Willis who just missed out on 1^st place with 24.68% of the vote, while Golf and Badminton star Mike Burris was 3rd. Donna is the first deaf woman to win the DSPY award.

Our very own ppvote audience response systems were used during the event to determine the winners of all the awards. 60% of each award was based on the judges vote, while the other 40% came down to the live audience vote on the night. The audience’s CLiKAPAD keypads instantly provided the results to the ppvote system.

There were six other awards handed out as well as the lifetime achievement award which was won by Gerry Hughes. Gerry became the world’s first deaf yachtsman to sail around the world single-handed in 2014. Unfortunately, special guest Beth Tweddle MBE could not attend the awards ceremony on the night, but there were video messages from golfer Tony Jacklin and Rugby star Ben Cohen.

We’d like to thank DSPY for what was a wonderfully celebrated evening and once again congratulate all the winners on the night, especially runner-up Jacob Willis and DSPY winner Donna Cross. Well done Jacob!
